Musical Trees: Tree Hunting Playlists

As I traveled round Britain and Ireland researching Tree Hunting, I spent a lot of time listening to music, particularly as I was driving. I covered 30,000 miles, 20,000 by car, so I listened to plenty of songs.

Music became my companion on my five year Tree Hunting journey. I have condensed some of my favourite tracks into Spotify playlists.

You may be reading this and saying to yourself, ‘What are you doing messing around with music – get back to the trees please!’ Well, there is method to my madness.

This Sunday, 1st June 2025, I will be talking to Cerys Matthews on BBC 6Music about Tree Hunting. I am VERY excited about this. Even more excitingly, Cerys’ producer asked for a few track suggestions which summed up my journey. I gave them half a dozen. I don’t know if they will be played. You’ll have to tune in around 11:45 to see if any made the cut. I’m going to keep you guessing as to what I chose, but here are three Tree Hunting playlists.

I’m calling them Mainline, Up a Bit and Down a Bit.

Messing around with Spotify is an addictive pastime. It struck me that one of the walks in my 2020 book ‘London Tree Walks’ was music themed. In fact, the book includes a discography. Here, in my London Tree Walks playlist is a selection of tracks taken from the albums associated with the ‘Rock Family Trees’ walk.

I hope you enjoy the music, and I hope you can tune into Cerys Matthews this Sunday.

[…] For the next couple of weeks I was in and out of studios talking about particular trees in places like Cardiff, Glasgow, Northampton, Sheffield and Coventry. But the most memorable media appearance was when I was a guest on Cerys Matthews’ Sunday morning 6Music show. The producer asked if there were any tracks I could suggest they play. So I sent off a list. I was bowled over when they selected two of my choices: Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi (with the famous reference to the tree museum), and Supernature by 70s Euro disco supremo, Cerrone. If your interest is piqued, I have put together three playlists featuring these and many more tracks that kept me company during my Tree Hunting travels. Listen, and read more about them here. […]
